(Scroll down for video) A married mother was jailed for having an affair with a teenage boy despite the fact that he was the age of consent.
The female guidance counselor was sentenced to jail and ordered to register as a sex offender for sleeping with the student.
Mackenzie Land Matthews, the former guidance counselor of a high school in Ohio, pleaded guilty to one count of felony sexual assault and will have to register as a sex offender for the rest of her life.
Matthews cried as the verdict was read in court on Tuesday. Her family and supporters joined her in the courtroom.
Matthews, 34, apologized to her husband, children and the victim in court after she admitted to having consensual sex with the 18-year-old senior at the Heath High School.
Police said that the incident occurred a few years ago, but the victim did not tell anyone about his encounters with Matthews until a few months ago.
Matthews resigned from her position at the school after she was arrested. In Ohio, sexual behavior among educators and students is prohibited regardless of age or consent.
“If she had waited four months for the student to graduate, it would not have been a crime,” said Prosecutor Ken Oswalt.
Oswalt told Judge Thomas Marcelain, that the family of the victim had urged him not to seek a prison term for the teacher because she has young children.
Matthews has no criminal record and had no previous disciplinary problems at the school, where she had worked since 2005.
The judge ruled that a prison sentence was necessary, and sentenced her to two years in prison.
