A well meaning gesture to help homeless people with gifts backfired.
Homeless people were invited to attended an event run by the government in Malaysia.
During the event, the homeless people were handed gifts, which they cannot use. They received large appliances.
The kind gesture sent the wrong message when some of the homeless eagerly unwrapped their gifts only to find the kitchen appliances.
Pertiwi Soup Kitchen founder Munirah Abdul Hamid, said that although the initiative was well received, she was surprised that appliances were given as gifts to people who are homeless and are unable to use them.
She explained that although it was a nice gesture, we must understand that these people do not even have a place to stay, much less a place to use a coffee maker or a hand mixer, which they received.
“Some of them approached me and asked if I wanted to buy the appliances they received for money,” Hamid said.
Hamid said that she was contacted by an official from the ministry before the event to discuss what gifts were appropriate for the homeless and she suggested food for a few days or even clothing, but her suggestions were not followed.
Officials said that next time, they will hand out more appropriate gifts for the homeless.
