(Scroll down for video) A large group of children in Kenya, who were protesting the seizure of their playground, were dispersed with tear gas, according to a video uploaded to the Internet.
Nairobi Police have fired tear gas at the students of a large school after they were protesting the decision to sell the playground to a housing developer.
There were no classes at the Lang’ata school for two weeks due to a teachers strike. This week, when the students returned, they found that a fence was built around the playground.
The school has about 1,000 children between the ages of 3 and 14, and it is run by the Nairobi City Council. Several children were injured in police action to disperse the crowd, and were taken to a hospital.
At least one police officer was injured when he was hit by a stone thrown by a protester. Among the protesters were school teachers and political activists.
The council has said the park is public land. Critics have alleged that corruption was behind an agreement to hand over the land to developers.
