A young man is recovering at a hospital after cutting off his own manhood because it caused him to sin, doctors in Nigeria said.

According to the police investigation, the 27-year-old man, who was not identified, is a member of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG).

Earlier this week, the man joined church members for a 21-day fasting and prayer program organized by the church.

The man told investigators that he believes that prayers and fasts should be pursued with piety, and decided to follow Jesus, who told people to cut off any part of their bodies that lead to sin.

On Sunday, the man felt that his manhood is preventing him from getting closer to God. He took a large knife and cut off his manhood.

Witnesses who saw the man cutting himself, detained him and he was taken to a nearby hospital. Doctors were unable to reattach his manhood, and the man said that he is praying that it should grow back on its own.
