The three-year-old boy of Kentucky, was struck and killed by the train on Monday, while walking with his dog along railroad tracks, police said.

The boy, identified as Trayton Joiner, was walking on the train tracks close to his home when he was hit by the train.

Joiner was taken by an ambulance to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Hopkinsville Police Sergeant Martin Lopez said.

Hopkinsville police spokesman Paul Ray said that the train engineer saw the dog first and then the child, but was unable to stop.

The train had two locomotives, and was pulling 106 empty coal cars from Nashville, Tennessee, to Madisonville, Kentucky.

The dog, a female pit bull mix, was also struck by the train and was taken to the Skyline Animal Clinic in Hopkinsville. The dog is expected to survive, according to staff members.

Police are investigating the incident and are still trying to determine why the child was with the dog by himself.
