A fugitive doctor who fled New York after being accused of child rape, was freed by a court in the United Kingdom.
48-year-old Tobias Bowen fled New York after being charged with two counts of child rape, the Westminster Magistrate’s Court heard.
Bowen initially went to Africa, before spending time in the Netherlands. He was eventually captured by police in Milton Keynes, and he has been in jail facing extradition.
Now, a judge ruled that the suspect’s right to liberty and security would be at risk if he had to go back to New York. If convicted in New York, Bowen faces up to life in prison.
Bowen will now be allowed to join his wife and children in the United Kingdom. Bowen ran a public hospital in Liberia, before moving to New York.
