(Scroll down for video) A young man was arrested, charged and convicted of attempted murder after slashing the faces of two popular teen singers, prosecutors in Japan said.
Morioka Police said that 24-year-old Satoru Umeta attacked Rina Kawaei and Anna Iriyama, both 19 years old, as well as a staff member during a fans handshake event held by the group AKB48 for their fans in Iwate.
The court heard that Umeta, was on a line of about 50 fans waiting for his chance to shake the hands of the singers before slashing their faces with a long knife.
Both women suffered deep cuts on their arms and heads.
During questioning, Umeta told police that he wanted to commit random acts of murder and decided to target members of the AKB48 pop group.
The Morioka District Court will sentence Umeta next month, after being convicted on 2 counts of attempted murder.
