The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said that 2-year-old Kaleb Ahles died on Wednesday night, after finding his father’s gun and shooting himself in the chest.

According to the police investigation, the child’s parents were coming out of their home in the 1000 block of Misty Hollow Lane in Tarpon Springs around 5:00 p.m., when the child entered the family car.

23-year-old Kevin Ahles, the father of the child, left a .380-caliber pistol in the vehicle. The child was alone in the car when the family heard a loud popping sound.

The boy apparently found the gun in the glove compartment and shot himself in the chest. The child’s parents immediately ran to the vehicle.

The mother, 23-year-old Christina Nigro, began CPR while family members on the scene called police. The child was rushed to Trinity Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

No charges are expected to be filed as the father had a license to carry a weapon and it was properly stored in the vehicle.
