A man who was caught throwing cigarettes from his window, was ordered by a court to pay a large fine, prosecutors in Singapore said.
The fine of $19,800 was the highest ever given for littering offenses.
The incident began when the National Environment Agency (NEA) received a complaint about the 38-year-old unidentified man who was throwing cigarettes from his apartment window.
Police launched an investigation, and officers observed 34 incidents of littering. The man regularly threw cigarette butts out of his home at Block 224C Compassvale Walk.
Despite attempts by officers to get the man to stop throwing cigarettes from his window, the littering problem persisted and the man was charged with littering.
He was ordered to pay a fine of $19,800 and to complete 5 hours of community service.
