A sleeping woman was attacked by a robot that was vacuuming her home, rescue workers in South Korea said.

The 52-year-old woman identified as Ryu of Changwon, was taking a nap on the floor of her home when the vacuum cleaner robot began cleaning.

After a few minutes, the robot mistook her hair for dust and sucked it into its mouth. The woman woke up in pain, and after being unable to break free from the robot, she called the fire department.

Firefighters managed to free the woman from the robot, and she did not suffer any serious physical injuries. However, her psychological condition is not yet known.

Robot vacuum cleaners are equipped with sensors that allow them to steer clear of obstacles, avoid falling down the stairs, and detect dust and other debris on the floor.

They can also be programmed to seek out an outlet for recharging.
