Doctors in India, were shocked to discover that twins were born to their mother who turned out to be 95 percent male.
The 32-year-old mother was diagnosed with intersex, in which she had the physical appearance of a woman, but had more than 95 percent of XY chromosomes.
The mother underwent more than 12 months of hormonal treatment and another medical procedure that helped develop the uterus to allow for pregnancy.
On Friday, she gave birth to a boy and a girl. A specialist at the hospital where the mother gave birth said that she never went through puberty and never menstruated.
A team of doctors discovered during their research that there has been only five similar cases ever reported. The mother was surprised to learn about her condition, but was determined to undergo treatment to get pregnant.
The husband was very supportive and said that no matter what, she is still his wife. The husband’s sperm was used to fertilize eggs from a donor, which were then implanted in the uterus.
The babies were born by Caesarean section, weighing about 5 pounds each.
