(Scroll down for video) An 11-year-old girl cried as she sat in front of a judge in shackles.
The young girl of Ohio, was charged with murder after beating a two-month-old baby to death.
Police said that the girl’s mother babysat the child, Zuri Whitehead, who was the daughter of her friend.
The pre-teen appeared at the Lake County Juvenile Court, on charges of murder.
The 39-year-old mother fell asleep on a couch with her daughter and the baby in the room, Wickliffe Police Chief Randy Ice said.
Less than an hour later, the woman was awakened by her daughter, who was holding the injured child.
The 11-year-old girl had taken the baby upstairs while his mother slept, and severely injured the child. The baby was bleeding and his head was badly swollen.
The mother of the 11-year-old girl called police immediately. She told the dispatcher that the baby was having trouble breathing and her eyes were closed.
The baby was flown to a hospital for surgery, but she did not survive her injuries.
An autopsy revealed that the baby suffered massive brain injuries, and severe damage to the liver, spleen and kidneys. The baby also suffered extensive internal bleeding.
The cause of death was multiple blunt force trauma to the head and torso, police said in a statement. The death has been ruled a homicide.
The mother of the 11-year-old girl was not charged in the case. She and the baby’s mother, Trina Whitehead, had known each other for about 5 years.
This is not the first time that police were called in regards to the 11-year-old girl. The middle school where the girl attends, had called police on one occasion for a non-violent incident, Ice said.
