(Scroll down for video) A plane was forced to go back to the gate after a woman suffered a sting by a scorpion, an Alaska Airlines company spokesperson said.

The scorpion stung the woman’s hand just as the plane was ready for takeoff from an airport in Los Angeles, California.

Flight 567 was heading to Portland, Oregon, on Saturday night. The plane returned to the gate, and the woman was checked by doctors.

She refused further medical treatment, but did not go back on the plane.

The woman killed the scorpion by stomping on it, and flight attendants checked overhead compartments for additional insects.

It is unclear how the scorpion boarded the plane, but the flight originated in Los Cabos, Mexico, where scorpions are common. The flight took off at 8:40 p.m., about an hour late.
