(Scroll down for video) A man was thrown into jail and stayed there for months after being caught in possession of legal over the counter vitamins, police in Minnesota said.
Last year, 31-year-old Joseph Burrell was charged with two counts of drug possession.
Burrell was initially arrested for driving outside a grocery store parking lot without the vehicle’s lights on. When police searched his vehicle, they found a bag containing powder.
A field test determined that it could be an amphetamine. Burrell insisted that the substance was legal, and that he had purchased to the powder to treat a chronically sore shoulder.
Burrell was urged to plead guilty as part of a plea bargain agreement, but he refused. His bail was set at $250,000.
After several months of being incarcerated, the charges were dropped after prosecutors used a more sophisticated means of analyzing the powder and discovered that it was a legal over the counter vitamin.
