A pastor was arrested on charges of drug smuggling after he was caught with a large stash of drugs at an airport, police in Nigeria said.
Pastor Michael Raji, 60, of the Eternal Sacred Order church, has been arrested by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), after being caught having N609 million ($3,051,000) worth of illegal drugs.
Raji was caught at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport before boarding a flight to South Africa.
During questioning, Raji told investigators that he hid the drugs in his church for four months after getting them from a friend. Raji also said that he was praying for the drugs’ successful trip to South Africa.
Agents raided the church, where they found methamphetamine and ephedrine. According to the police investigation, Raji is a senior member of a drug gang operating in Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa.
Raji was found in possession of three international passports bearing his picture with the names Michael Raji and Kadigun Fatah Ola.
