(Scroll down for video) A kindergarten teacher resigned from her position after she was found drinking beer while caring for her students.
Jennifer Rich, 40, of Ankeny, Iowa, is facing public intoxication and child endangerment charges after she was found to be intoxicated in her classroom.
The incident came to light after the mother of a student went to school to help with a class project.
The mother found an open bottle of beer and the teacher appeared to be intoxicated. The woman called her husband, who then called the police.
When the police arrived, they gave the kindergarten a breathalyzer test and determined that she was under the influence.
During a search of the classroom, officers found two empty cans of beer and four unopened bottles of alcohol. Police said that the teacher’s eyes were watery and red.
Rich was arrested and a substitute teacher was placed in the classroom.
East Elementary School Principal Julianne Taylor called parents to apologize for the incident and to assure them that their children were never in danger.
Rich, who has been with the district since 2001, resigned from her teaching position.
