(Scroll down for video) A doctor in Michigan, refused to care for a baby because she was born into a family with two mothers.
The lesbian couple said that they were devastated after the pediatrician refused to care for their newborn baby because of their sexual orientation.
Jami and Krista Contreras sat in the exam room, waiting to be seen by the doctor when their baby was just 6 days old.
However, another doctor came into the room and told them that the doctor, who they chose to care for their daughter, refused to see them.
The doctor was identified as Vesna Roi, 49, who has been practicing pediatric medicine for 19 years. The doctor refused to treat their daughter named Bay.
The second doctor said that Dr. Roi “prayed on it and decided that she won’t be able to care for their baby.”
Dr. Roi refused to come into the officer that day because she did not want to see the lesbian couple.
The doctor’s decision not to care for the child of two gay parents is not illegal. It is not included in Michigan’s anti-discrimination Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act.
Attorney Dana Nessel said that there are laws that dictate that one cannot discriminate against others based on race, ethnicity and religion. However the state of Michigan, does not have laws protecting people based on sexual orientation.
