A drug attack turned violent after a priest caught him stealing cash from the church’s charity box, prosecutors in Ireland said.

33-year-old Mark Pierce warned Father William Fitzpatrick, 67, to let him go before urinating in his pants in church.

Pierce also threatened to prick the priest with a syringe before police arrived at the scene to arrest him. Pierce, a father of four children, pleaded guilty at the Dublin Circuit Criminal to theft and making threats.

Fitzpatrick told investigators that he had been preparing for prayers when a woman told him that Pierce was in the back of the church trying to steal from the charity box.

He approached him and asked what he was doing. Pierce tried to push past him and became aggressive. Pierce then reached into the pocket and produced a syringe.

A man at the scene was able keep Pierce in a headlock, while Fitzpatrick held his wrist so he could not use the syringe. During police questioning, Pierce admitted that he had gone to the church to try to take the change from the charity box.

Pierce admitted to spending about 40 euros ($44) a day on drugs.
