(Scroll down for video) The owner of a cherry factory shot himself moments before police arrested him for manufacturing drugs.
The man, who was known as the “Cherry King,” shot himself in the head when officers found his hidden marijuana factory in his place of business.
Arthur Mondella, 57, shot himself dead in the bathroom of Dell’s Maraschino Cherries factory in Brooklyn, New York.
Mondella’s family has been in the cherry business for 67 years.
Authorities initially came to the business to investigate if Dell’s Maraschino Cherries factory was dumping potentially hazardous waste into the sewer system.
While walking around the plant, investigators smelled marijuana. They then spotted shelves, which did not look right.
When they asked Mondella about the shelves, he excused himself to go to the bathroom. He then entered an office room and told his sister to look after his children before shooting himself.
Mondella was pronounced dead from a single gunshot wound to the head.
Authorities uncovered a huge marijuana factory and now suspect that the cherry company was just a front for the drug business.
Police allegedly found 80 pounds of marijuana, thousands of dollars in cash and luxury vehicles behind the shelves.
