Woman sets herself on fire while driving before crashing her car and jumping off bridge

(Scroll down for video) A woman who sought to commit suicide, failed despite setting herself on fire, crashing her car, and jumping off a bridge, police in Oregon said.

Portland Police said that Mary Johanna Gawenda, survived the ordeal and was being treated at a hospital for non life threatening injuries.

The incident began when a woman noticed the victim driving recklessly on Interstate 105, and called the police. The victim, who set herself on fire while driving, hit the median before crashing near an exit ramp.

The 39-year-old woman left her car and jumped off the bridge despite the attempt by witnesses to intervene. She fell about 40 feet into a parking lot below.

The woman suffered non life threatening injuries. A person who was in the parking lot under the bridge, was hit by debris, but was not seriously injured.

Investigators said that they believe the woman was trying to commit suicide.
