A man who was arrested on charges of murder for killing his neighbor, claims that he thought the victim was an alligator, police in Louisiana said.
31-year-old Robert Chouest of Cut Off, who was charged with murder, claims that he had been on drugs for days before shooting the victim in his neighbor’s driveway.
According to the police investigation, Chouest shot 41-year-old Shawn Galjour of Larose, in the head with a rifle.
Galjour entered the property on ABC Lane around 4:30 a.m., and about 25 minutes later, officers found his body next to the house of the suspect.
Chouest told investigators that he had been awake for two or three days before the shooting, using cocaine, methamphetamine, prescription pills and alcohol.
Chouest said he smoked crack right before the incident. The suspect has a habit of shooting rabbits, squirrels, raccoons, opossums and coyotes.
Chouest said that his grandfather saw a crocodile in the area, and when he saw the victim, he mistook him for the crocodile. If convicted of second-degree murder, Chouest faces life in prison.
