Customs agents have managed to intercept a large shipment of radioactive female pads that were shipped into the country and was set to be sent to retail store locations, custom officials in Lebanon said.
The Finance Ministry said that the agents seized 1,200 pounds of feminine hygiene products at the Rafik Hariri International Airport on Friday, after radioactivity was detected.
The items were packed in more than 30 boxes. The shipment arrived from Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The discovery came amid a crackdown on radioactive goods being sent to the country.
Last month, customs officers at the airport detected radioactivity in a shipment of cellphone covers imported from China.
In January, toxic radioactive material was discovered in food items, narcotic pills and industrial machines that were being smuggled into the airport and the port of Beirut.
