Police are investigating the tragic death of an entire family while they were visiting their father in prison.
Former police officer Domingo Villa, 40, was serving life in prison for killing his wife, when he killed his longtime girlfriend and their children.
Villa is accused of stabbing Isela, 36, to death with a sharpened wire in the Puente Grande Federal Prison in Mexico.
He then killed the two children they share and his stepdaughter, while they were visiting him in the maximum security prison.
Villa then tried to commit suicide by stabbing himself with the homemade weapon.
Authorities said that Villa flew into a rage when his children complained that their mother was unkind to them.
He responded by stabbing his girlfriend in the chest and killing their 4-year-old son, Angel, and his daughter, Valeria, who is under a year old.
His stepdaughter, Erika, 17, escaped after being seriously injured. She was rushed to a hospital, but later succumbed to her injuries.
Attorney General Luis Najera admitted that there were no security guards in the area when the crime occurred.
Nobody realized what was happening until the 17-year-old girl cried for help, the official said.
Security guards found the prisoner attempting to kill himself. He was arrested and taken to a hospital, where he was treated for his injuries.
Villa was behind bars for killing his wife in a jealous fit of rage.
Villa was being kept separate from other criminals because as a former police officer, he would be in grave danger from prison gangs.
