A convenience store owner was arrested on charges of murder after allegedly killing his customer because he refused to pay for a cigarette, police in Nigeria said.

Lagos State Police said that they arrested 42-year-old Alli Mustapha, after being accused of stabbing Idowu Maliki, for smoking a cigarette worth N10 ($0.05) and refusing to pay for it.

According to the police investigation, Mustapha sold a single cigarette to Maliki on Saturday, but he refused to pay when asked for the money.

An argument broke out during which Mustapha stabbed Maliki in the head. Maliki was rushed to the Igando General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police officers who arrived at the scene, arrested Mustapha.

During questioning, Mustapha admitted to committing the crime, but insisted that Maliki hit him first.

Mustapha claims that when he tried to block Maliki from entering his store, he took a chair and threw it at him. That’s when he quickly grabbed a knife and stabbed Maliki in the head.

Mustapha was charged with one count of murder.
