A man was arrested, charged and convicted of conspiracy to commit armed robbery after teaming up with a gang of robbers and stealing a cellphone from a home, prosecutors in Nigeria said.

Now, the 24-year-old man has been sentenced to death by hanging.

The Delta State Superior Court has sentenced Vicente Okwekwu to death for stealing the cellphone along with N10,000 ($50) at gunpoint.

The court found him guilty of three counts of conspiracy to commit armed robbery.

He was sentenced to death by hanging for one conspiracy charge and to 21 years in prison for each of the other two charges.

According to the police investigation, Okwekwu broke into the apartment of his victims, Ofoyeju Peter and Tietie Moses, along with two other robbers and stole N10,000 and a cellphone while armed with a gun and a machete.

The victims woke up by the noise and began to scream for help. Their screams attracted members of a vigilante group in the area.

They arrived at the scene and detained Okwekwu until police arrived. Okwekwu denied the allegations and pleaded not guilty to the charges.
