A man was arrested on charges of murder after allegedly crashing his car while traveling on a highway to kill his wife because she asked for a divorce, police in the United Kingdom said.
The Leicester Crown Court heard that the man deliberately drove his car off the M1 highway to kill his wife who wanted a divorce.
The jury saw a video that showed 51-year-old Ian Walters crashing his car, fatally injuring his wife Tracy. Walters denied intentionally murdering his wife, who died in a hospital after the crash.
Walters of Tregantle Walk, Swindon, was also injured and spent a month recovering in a hospital. The couple got married several years ago, and Walters became abusive.
Recently, Tracy Walters, 48, told her husband that she wanted a divorce. The day of the crash, the couple had been traveling home with two dogs after cutting short a vacation.
4 seconds before the crash, the car was traveling at 79 miles per hour. Tracy Walters was cut from the wreckage and airlifted to the hospital. She died of her injuries two days later.
Ian Walters was also airlifted to the hospital with serious injuries and remained there for a month. He later told police that he had not done anything intentionally to hurt his wife.
