A man killed his girlfriend before turning the gun on himself during a dispute over a winning lottery ticket.
Terry Martin, 48, of Texas, won $500 on a scratch-off lottery ticket and fatally shot his girlfriend and then himself after the two got into a heated argument over sharing the profits, according to Homicide Sergeant Joe Loughman.
Police said that his girlfriend, Laurice Hampton, 48, wanted half of the winnings, but he refused to share it with her. The two got into an argument before Hampton was shot in the chest.
Martin then turned the gun on himself.
Hampton was able to call police about 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, to report the shooting. The responding officers found the couple in the bedroom of their home in Fort Worth.
Martin was pronounced dead at the scene of a single gunshot wound to the head. Hampton was taken by ambulance a hospital, but died a few hours later.
The couple knew each other since childhood and had lived together for several years.
Court records showed that there was a history of violence between the couple. According to Tarrant County court documents, Martin was convicted of assaulting Hampton in their home in 2011. He was sentenced to 1 day in jail and he received a fine of $214.
