Doctors told her family that she only had a 10 percent chance of coming out of the coma she had fallen into. In January, she gave birth to a baby boy, who the family named Baby L.
On Wednesday, Giles opened her eyes for the first time since the accident.
She was able to recognize her father, and saw a picture of her son, who has gradually gained weight and now weighs more than six pounds.
The Giles family said that they had remained positive despite the doctor’s poor prognosis for recovery. Giles has been recovering in the Harriman Care and Rehab Center in Harriman.
Giles suffered a head injury during the car accident, which occurred when a friend fell asleep at the wheel before crashing into a concrete barrier.
