A mother was jailed after she refused to get medical help for her toddler after she was brutally beaten.
Stephanie Williams of Maryland, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for not helping her young daughter after she was beaten by her father.
21-month-old Anayah was taken away from her parents by social services and placed in foster care. However, she was later returned to her parents despite the objection from doctors who said that there was evidence of prior abuse.
The parents claimed that their daughter got hurt when she fell, and they regained custody of their daughter.
After being returned to her parents, Anayah was severely abused by her father and she died of her injuries.
The father, 25-year-old Frankie Aubrey Williams, faces murder charges after it was confirmed that the girl died as a result of being abused.
Frankie Aubrey Williams confessed to hitting the child, but plans to defend himself with an insanity defense in court.
Stephanie Williams, was convicted of first-degree child abuse resulting in death. Prosecutors said that the mother did not seek medical attention for her daughter after returning home from work despite the fact that the child showed signs that she was seriously ill.
The mother told investigators that she was afraid to go to a doctor even after her daughter was in pain, vomiting, and had difficulty breathing, because her husband told her that child protective services will take the child from them.
