A mother was found dead in an elevator shaft and her 3-year-old son said that he pushed her down, police said.

45-year-old Xie Hong Feng of Ningbo, China, was found dead at the bottom of the elevator shaft after she had been trying to find her keys.

Building manager Shao Yang, 52, said that the woman was taking out her garbage when she dropped the keys into the elevator shaft, and asked him to help her find the keys.

“I told her that I will manually move the elevator up one floor, keeping the door open so she could try to get the keys, which she had dropped into the narrow space between the elevator and the 5th floor,” Yang said.

After he manually moved the elevator, Yang came back to help the woman, but he did not find her and only saw her 3-year-old standing there.

“When I asked him where his mother the was, the boy told me that he had pushed his mom and pointed to the elevator shaft,” Yang added.

Yang looked down and saw Feng laying at the bottom of the elevator shaft.

He immediately grabbed the boy so that he does not fall and called the police.

A police spokesperson said: “Unfortunately there is no surveillance video, so we have no way to really know what happened.

“If the child says he pushed then we will have to accept that, although we will not press charges, and it was definitely an accident,” the spokesperson said.

Fen’s distraught husband, Tang, 50, said: “This is the saddest thing. It is not just that my wife is dead, but my son is facing the prospect of having to bear the guilt of her death for the rest of his life.”
