(Scroll down for video) A young boy was arrested after his gun went off in class.
The 11-year-old student of Las Vegas, Nevada, was arrested on Wednesday, after a gun accidentally went off at the Deskin Elementary School.
There were other students nearby, but no one was injured. The shot left a hole in the student’s desk, authorities said.
The fifth grader reached into his backpack around 3:20 p.m., as students were preparing to leave for the day. He pulled out the .45 caliber pistol, which went off in the classroom, Captain Ken Young said.
School staff immediately “isolated” the student. After the shooting, authorities found the gun along with a BB gun in the boy’s backpack.
The firearm was reported stolen and the police have identified the original owner.
It was unclear how the student got the gun. Young said that there appeared to be no relationship between the owner of the weapon and the student.
The boy was taken into custody in a juvenile detention center and faces charges of possession of stolen property, possession of a dangerous weapon on state property and discharging a firearm, police said.
The child’s parents were cooperating with police.
