A man was arrested on charges of abuse after locking up his mentally ill sister in a room, prosecutors in Connecticut said.

Now, the man pleaded guilty to abuse and cruelty for leaving his sister in her own urine and feces.

59-year-old Arthur Gauvin of Seymour, faces up to 10 years in prison for abusing 57-year-old Nancy Gauvin.

Police officers found Nancy Gauvin, covered with urine and feces in a bedroom with such a strong smell that they could not breathe.

The police searched the house after receiving a complaint from a neighbor that the woman has been locked up in the house for years.

Arthur Gauvin told police that he kept his sister locked up in a room so that his dog shouldn’t eat her food. Nancy Gauvin required multiple showers after her arrival at a hospital.

Her hair was sticky, and her fingernails and toenails were about 4 inches long. Nancy Gauvin now lives in a rehabilitation center.
