A clothing store employee was arrested on charges of sexual assault after allegedly groping a woman’s chest as he was placing a scarf around her neck, police in the United Arab Emirates said.
The 21-year-old U.S. Navy Officer told police that she was assaulted by the man while he was trying to sell her a scarf in the fitting room.
The day of the assault, M. K. and a group of sailors toured various areas in Dubai. They entered the clothing store and 47-year-old S. K., invited her to the accessories section.
The employee took off the woman’s necklace and told her to try on a scarf. When she refused, the employee forcefully put it on the woman and squeezed her chest.
When the woman told him that she doesn’t have money to pay for the scarf, the employee groped her again. The woman threw away the scarf and quickly returned to the group of sailors.
The officer said that she initially did not report the incident or tell anyone about it because she was ashamed and afraid that no one would believe her.
Her colleagues bought several items from the store and left. Three days after the attack, she reported the incident to her superiors.
Officials of the U.S. Navy contacted the Dubai Police, who arrested the suspect.
The defendant denied a charge of sexual assault and told the judge to review security camera footage from the store, which will show that nothing happened.
