A woman was in court when she confronted her daughter’s killer.
However, rather than being angry with him, the mother hugged the killer and forgave him for what he did.
Robert Carroll of Connecticut, was driving with his wife Ruth near Hartford, when he made a left turn at a red light because he mistakenly thought it was green.
He crashed into a minivan driven by Melinda Hart, a pregnant mother of three children. Her children were in the van with her at the time of the accident.
They were taken to the hospital and were later released. Sadly, the 37-year-old woman and her unborn baby died at the scene.
86-year-old Ruth Carroll also died in the car crash.
On Friday, Carroll pleaded no contest to failure to obey a traffic sign and was fined $75. He also agreed to surrender his driver’s license.
In court, Hart’s mother, Sandra, told Carroll that she forgave him for killing her daughter.
“Mr. Carroll, I just want you to know that my family and I know this was an accident. We feel your loss and we keep you in our prayers.”
The grieving mother then wrapped her arms around the elderly man and hugged him.
“I feel the same, and I’m sorry,” said Carroll.
Carroll, who was originally charged with manslaughter and assault charges, told the court that has been traumatized by the incident and has had flashbacks.
“Within 15 seconds of the impact, my wife of 67 years, and the mother of six children died in my arms,” Carroll said.
Prosecutor Donna Mambrino said the event was an all around tragedy. “Truly, this was an accident,” she said.
