(Scroll down for video) A couple who was married for 67 years are forced to live apart.
94-year-old Noboru Kawamoto, and his wife Elaine of Hawaii, are still married but the law does not allow them to live in the same nursing care facility.
Noboru Kawamoto, who is an army veteran, and his wife, have private insurance, which pays for their nursing homes. However, the government in Hawaii, banned the nursing home from taking more than a certain number of private paying customers.
The law was put in place to protect the people who benefit from medicaid, so that nursing homes do not take private paying customers only.
This week, people demanded changes to the law so that couples can be in the same nursing home. However, the law did not pass.
Mr. Kawamoto said that he is very disappointed that the law did not pass as he misses his wife very much and he wants to live with her.
The couple see each other once a week on Sunday. They are attempting to get a waiver on the law so that they can be together once again.
