(Scroll down for video) A police officer is paying back a favor with a lawsuit against Starbucks, according to court documents filed in North Carolina.
The police officer received a free cup of coffee while in uniform.
He is suing Starbucks, claiming that he burned himself when hot drink poured over him after the cup collapsed in his grip. The lawsuit was filed in Raleigh, and it is set to go on trial this week.
Matthew Kohr, a lieutenant in the Raleigh Police force, received the cup of coffee for free. When he went to pick up the cup, the lid and the cup folded back on itself, spilling hot coffee in the thigh and groin area.
Kohr said that the burns worsened his Crohn’s disease, and it led him to have surgery to remove part of his large intestine. The lawsuit alleges that he was not the only one who has suffered from the burns because his wife has lost her partner.
He is seeking $750,000 to cover the cost of medical and legal fees. Starbucks denied the allegations.
