(Scroll down for video) A man who pretended to be a police officer, arrested a girl and sexually assaulted her.
41-year-old Joseph Kenneth Cornett of California, attempted to rape the girl despite the fact that he is HIV positive.
Police said that Cornett, stopped the 15-year-old girl on her way home from school. He pretended to be a police officer and accused her of jaywalking, prosecutors said.
He then took her to an abandoned school in Los Angeles. He sexually assaulted her and attempted to rape her, but the girl managed to escape, prosecutors said.
She ran to a parent who was leaving the Lancaster Baptist Church across the street from where she was assaulted, and asked for help.
Good Samaritans chased the suspect, but could not catch him. He ran to his car, but soon became stuck in sand, allowing police to arrest him.
Cornett faces charges including kidnapping to commit rape, lewd act upon a child, sexual penetration by foreign object with a minor older than 14 years, attempted forcible rape and attempting to have unprotected sexual activity by one who knows he is infected by HIV.
