(Scroll down for video) Many police officers attended the graduation of a teenager who graduated a few hours after his father was killed in the line of duty.
42-year-old deputy Sonny Smith of Arkansas, died after being shot during a robbery chase, police said.
The officer worked for the reserve deputy with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department, when he was dispatched to a home burglary around 1:00 a.m.
Officers searched the area and found 51-year-old Fred Kauffeld about 15 miles from the crime scene.
When the 11-year veteran confronted the suspect, he shot the officer in the neck.
Smith, a decorated veteran of the U.S. Navy, was pronounced dead at a hospital, police said.
He died of a gunshot wound to the throat after the suspect opened fire, police said.
Smith was able to return fire, leaving Kauffeld with minor injuries.
Kauffeld was arrested and charged with killing the officer.
