71-year-old Josephine Bell of Illinois, was arrested on charges of animal cruelty in Madison County.

Investigators said that the grandmother killed the cat and four kittens with a hammer to teach her grandchildren a lesson.

The animal abuse was discovered in the family home in the 5000 block of West Victor Drive.

Police were called after her 13-year-old granddaughter opened the freezer, looking for a snack. She saw a big bag, opened it and find her beloved cat dead in the freezer. She sent a message to a family member, who called the police.

The Madison County Police arrived, and found the girl holding the bag with the cat.

Bell admitted that she killed the cat and its four kittens all because the children did not clean their rooms. Bell said that after freezing the dead cat she tossed the kittens in the trash.

The 71-year-old woman is now charged with aggravated animal cruelty and could face 1 to 3 years in prison.
