A woman was devastated when she began receiving calls from people wanting to have sex with her.

46-year-old Vanitha Maharaj of South Africa, told a court that she attempted to commit suicide after she was publicly shamed by her son’s boyfriend.

Ezren Veerabuthran of Durban, was angry that Maharaj, who is divorced, disapproved of his relationship with her son.

As revenge, he posted messages on social media websites inviting people to have sex with her. He wrote: “Free b***h,” along with her phone number on Facebook.

Maharaj hired a lawyer and sued the man for defamation of character.

She told the Durban Regional Court that she was uncomfortable at work and her relationship with family has been damaged. She also attempted suicide because of the hate campaign.

The woman said that she is still receiving responses to the messages.

Veerabuthran pleaded guilty to one charge of criminal defamation and one charge of crimen injuria.

Maharaj was seeking R15,000 (about $1,200) in compensation. However, the court only ordered Veerabuthran to attend anger management.

The judge said that if Veerabuthran reoffends in the future, he will have to pay R5,000 (about $400), to Maharaj.
