A politician was arrested after he paid a family to marry their young daughter.

The 35-year-old council member of India, married the 6-year-old girl in front of a small group of people.

Ratan Lal Jat is an elected official in the Gangrar, Rajasthan.

Jat used marriage broker Jamuni Bai, to arrange his marriage to the young girl. Bai is known for organizing child-bride marriages for a fee.

According to police, Jat claimed that the ceremony was a technicality as he had to meet the requirements of his religious group.

Jat belongs to Nata Pratha, which has a unique ancient custom, allowing married men to have an affair with married women.

However, the men must give the women’s husbands financial compensation. Jat, who is single, said that he married the 6-year-old girl in order to be able to sleep with his lover.

The girl’s family received an undisclosed amount of cash to marry the girl who is 29 years his junior. The girl will continue to live with her family.

Police arrested Jat after seeing photos of the wedding. He was charged under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act.
