A man and a woman are dead as a result of an elevator mishap.

The two people died in a tall building in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.

Police said that Elizabeth Mlangeni, was working in the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) building when she got stuck on the eighth floor.

The incident took place on Friday afternoon, after normal business hours.

Mlangeni used her phone to call for help and a technician, who was identified as Masina, was sent to assist her.

However, the two never made it out alive and were found in the elevator shaft 24 hours later.

Police believe that Masina tried to pull the woman out of the elevator, but was unsuccessful because she was obese.

“We believe that he tried to pull her out, but was overpowered because the woman was of heavy build,” police spokesperson Charity Charamba said.

“The two fell into the elevator shaft, which led to their deaths,” said Charamba.

The bodies were found on Saturday afternoon. It took police officers and firefighters about three hours to recover the bodies.

The NRZ Bulawayo building has 28 floors.
