Several tourists were caught defecating on graves at a cemetery because they wanted to do their business in untouched nature, police in Iceland said.

Sandfell police said that they have received numerous complaints from the old cemetery at the Vatnajokull National Park, that tourists are using it as a toilet.

Park warden Guomundur Ogmundsson said that the tourists are regularly seen in the cemetery instead of going to the public bathrooms at campsites near Skaftafell and Svinafell.

The graveyard is located on a trail leading up to the Hvannadalshnjukur mountain.

Ogmundsson added that tourists have also been found in areas not intended as campsites and two tourists were sleeping in a rental car off the road in an area covered with tall grass.

Park employees are forced to clean mountains of the trash and human waste left in the area.

Most tourists said that they use the graveyards as a toilet to save money, but some said that they like to go about their business alone in untouched nature.
