A police officer is facing a charge of assault after being seen on video punching a man who was accused of stealing a slice of pizza, police in New York said.
24-year-old Thomas Jennings of Brooklyn, suffered a cut to the head after being attacked by the police officer who was responding to the scene of a robbery.
Jennings claims that he was holding his hands in the air as the officer was talking to him. At some point, a second officer entered the pizza shop and punched Jennings in the back of the head.
Jennings bent over to protect himself as the officer continued to hit him. The first officer joined the beating and Jennings with a baton.
Jennings claims that he did not intend to steal the slice of pizza as he was only one dollar short and went outside to borrow money.
An employee stated that the man threatened not to pay anything for the pizza before running outside with salt and pepper shakers.
Police arrested Jennings on a charge of robbery. Police are investigating the officers for the beating, but so far, no arrests have been made.
