A woman was arrested, charged and convicted of animal abuse after choking her dog with duct tape and burying it in her backyard, prosecutors in the United Kingdom said.

Now, 22-year-old Hayley Cowan of Wigan, has been sentenced to serve four months in jail after being accused of killing her dog hours after it was returned to her by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA).

The RSPCA removed the dog after she was accused of kicking it.

The dog was returned to her after she promised that she would not harm it again. Cowan buried the body in her garden and told the RSPCA that her dog had escaped.

Witnesses confronted the woman after noticing the freshly dug grave in her yard. The neighbors dug up the grave and found the dog’s body.

An autopsy found that the died of suffocation through duct tape. In addition to the jail sentence, Cowan was also fined 500 pounds ($779) and banned from having animals for life.
