(Scroll down for video) A man was arrested on a charge of animal cruelty after allegedly burying his dog up to its head in stones, police in France said.

Now, thousands of animal lovers signed a petition to express their displeasure with the act of animal cruelty, and they are calling on judges to hand down a harsh sentence.

Pictures of the dog buried up to its head in stones, caused a frenzy on social media sites after a dog walker who saw the wounded animal, posted pictures on his Facebook account.

Pedro Dinis said that he called rescuers as he tried to free the buried dog.

Police in Carrieres-sur-Seine, said that the shocked and dehydrated dog was rushed to a nearby vet while its 21-year-old owner was tracked down and arrested.

The suspect claimed that the dog ran away from his home and he did not bury it. The dog suffers from arthritis. If convicted, the suspect could be sentenced to serve two years in prison and face a fine of up to 30,000 euros ($32,650).

266,248 people want the suspect to be sentenced to the maximum allowed by law, according to an Internet petition.
