A man was arrested on a charge of drug possession after police officers found what appeared to be crystal meth in his possession, police in Australia said.
The man of Maryborough, Queensland, remained in jail for four months until police realized that the material that was found in the possession of the suspect was really salt.
The incident began during a traffic stop. Police asked the suspect, who has a long criminal history, for permission to search the vehicle.
During the vehicle search, police found the salt, which they mistook for crystal meth. The man was remanded into custody after being denied bail.
After four months behind bars, police received the results of laboratory testing, which showed that the substance was Epsom salt.
The judge who presided over the case, slammed the police department for keeping an innocent man behind bars for four months.
