(Scroll down for video) A young mother was arrested on a charge of manslaughter after killing her son who had Down syndrome, by poisoning him with perfume, police in Louisiana said.
Now, 22-year-old Erika Wigstrom of Belle Chasse, has been sentenced to serve 40 years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter in connection with the death of her 17-month-old son Lucas Ruiz.
According to the police investigation, Lucas Ruiz had Down syndrome and heart disease, which left him needing surgery and being fed through a feeding tube.
Wigstrom first tried to kill Lucas Ruiz, by injecting perfume in his feeding tube while he was in the hospital for heart surgery, but he survived.
In another incident, she put hand sanitizer in his feeding tube and he died of alcohol poisoning. Lucas Ruiz had a blood alcohol level of 0.28, which is three times the legal limit for driving.
