A little girl will finally have justice after her father was found guilty of killing her in order to avoid paying child support.
The former airline baggage handler will spend the rest of his life behind bars for throwing his 4-year-old daughter to her death from a 120-foot cliff in California.
Jurors found Cameron Brown, 53, guilty of murder in connection with the death of Lauren Sarene Key.
He was convicted of murder after two previous juries could not agree on a verdict. Previous jurors could not agree if he should be convicted of manslaughter or murder.
Despite the jurors’ lack of agreement, Brown has been incarcerated for the past 10 years.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney said that Brown killed the girl because he hated her mother and he did not want to continue paying $1,000 per month in child support.
Prosecutors said that Brown asked Sarah Key-Marer, his girlfriend, to abort the pregnancy. He also tried to have her deported to the United Kingdom.
Brown and Key-Marer separated when she was pregnant and they were locked in a battle for custody and support when Lauren was killed.
Brown and his current wife, maintain his innocence. He said that his daughter ran ahead of him and fell to her death.
The case hinged on circumstantial evidence because the police never found an eyewitness to Lauren’s death.
Brown was found guilty of first-degree murder and of having killed his daughter for financial gain. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
His lawyers vowed to appeal the verdict.
