Police in South Carolina, said that a good Samaritan fell to her death when she stopped on a bridge to help a man who crashed his truck.
29-year-old Jessica Nicole Smith, who is a certified nursing assistant, stopped on I-385 about 1:30 a.m., after seeing a pickup truck crashing into a barrier.
Smith heard a man screaming from under the Greenville County bridge, witnesses said. The man, who was the driver of the truck, crashed and was thrown from his vehicle, witnesses said.
Smith decided to go over the bridge to help the victim.
Smith believed that the underpass was only a few feet below the bridge, officials said.
However, while trying to climb over the bridge, she fell more than 20 feet to her death. The condition of the man and the cause of the accident were not disclosed.
Her brokenhearted sister, Hope Smith, said that they lost their father last month. She said that losing her sister was devastating to the entire family.
Hope said that she will now care for her sister’s 9-year-old son Isaiah.
